My first ambulance ride

Most of you know the story by now, but this week wasn't so much fun.

Monday night I spent the entire night coughing my head off. I wake myself up sometimes during the night, but Monday was rough. When Tuesday morning arrived, I was better and things were somewhat back to normal. But Tuesday night, I was exhausted. I hate being held -- too confining. But Tuesday night, I just laid in Mommy's lap for an hour. It was the only thing I wanted to do. My body was warm, and I just didn't have the energy to play like normal.

Wednesday morning, Mommy and Papa took my temperature and it was 101 -- whatever that means. So they told me I had to go to the doctor. That's fine. Dr. Hodge-Spears is cool because she tries to be friends with me. The nurses there are cool also, until they break out the needles.

So Mommy took me to the doctor and my temperature was 103. Apparently that's really warm. They taped this cord on my toe and they started getting really nervous. I wasn't getting enough oxygen, so they did an X-ray. NOT ENJOYABLE. I had to straddle this seat while Mommy pulled my arms straight up as this big machine went around me. It was sooooo annoying. I'll admit I started crying a lot. Once the results came back, they doctor said I had a collapsed lung. Mommy was scared, and called Papa. I was scared too because I didn't know why everyone else was scared.

Then they put this mask on me that was hooked up to this huge green tank. Didn't like the mask, but the doctor said it helped me breathe better. It did, but it was right in my face. Papa arrived and we sat there talking for a while until these two people came. Then I had to get in my car seat and they strapped my car seat on a gurney. It was sort of fun as I rode down the hallway and out the door. I thought the doctor visit was over.

Once we were outside, the two uniformed people loaded the gurney -- with me on it -- into an ambulance. Mommy came, too, while Papa headed home to get some clothes. Apparently we were headed to the hospital. I thought we were going to ride with sirens on. I love sirens. But no -- no sirens were needed. We rode forever until we arrived at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. We went into the Emergency Room entrance, where about four nurses were there waiting on me. What a welcome.

At Children's, they finally got me into a room, where no less than a dozen people came to see me. A few people just came and did some work on the computer (I know how to do that!). A few others came and hooked up some wires to my chest (that was weird). This one guy, who was from Knoxville (Go Vols!) put a needle in my left hand. Ouch! He was trying to get an IV started but it didn't work. Then he went to my right hand. Ouch! That didn't work, either. So next was my leg, where they took some blood. Ouch!

Once the samples came back, the doctor there determined I did not have a collapsed lung. I have pneumonia.

So what does that mean, I asked. It meant another shot at the hospital, followed by one Thursday and one Friday. It meant Tylenol every four hours and Motrin every six hours. It meant lots of water. It meant Mommy and Papa checking my breathing every so often. And it meant I got to go home. I was feeling fine, just a cough and runny nose. I've played with Mommy and Papa just like normal, and I've had to go back to the doctor every day (Friday being the last). Another thing, I have to take breathing treatments where Mommy or Papa puts this hose in my face that sprays a mist. It helps get the junk out of my lungs.

It was a scary few days for me, and for Mommy and Papa. But we're doing well now. I'm sleeping good, and back to eating hot dogs, carrots, cheese and bananas.

But before I go, I have to send some shout outs:

-- Nichole Johnson, for helping me and Mommy at the hospital
-- Zina Widman, Mommy's friend and boss for hanging with us at the hospital
-- Pastor Jamie, for holding me while Mommy fed me at the hospital
-- Kati Auton and Amy Weaver, for stopping by to make me smile
-- Bill and Marlene Kimm, for planning to take Mace Dogg out if I stayed at the hospital
-- Bobby and Emily Noble, for offering to take Mace Dogg out and walk her
-- Everyone who called or e-mailed ... you know who you are!
-- Everyone at The Salvation Army who prayed for me thanks to the e-mail chain
-- Everyone at King Spring Baptist Church who prayed for me due to the e-mail
-- Everyone at Lynn Valley Baptist Church who prayed for me

I've probably missed somebody, and I'll take heat for it by Mommy and Papa. But it showed me there are a lot of people who care about me, and a lot of people who love me. And you know what? I love you, too.

Put out that fire!

Saturday night was my first visit to a Japanese restaurant. And let me just say, nobody warned me of what was going to happen.

We got there about 5:30 or so and everything was cool. It was almost like the place was closed because me, Mommy and Papa sat at a big table by ourselves. Then this guy came and started talking to us, dumping food on this big flat cooker. He started twirling knives around and making all kinds of sounds with his fork. He was banging it on the stove, which was cool because that's what I do!

Anyway, everything was fine and I was enjoying the extravaganza. But then, all of a sudden, he squirted this oil on the stove in a circle. Then he took out a lighter and lit the thing on fire! I DID NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL.

I am a little embarrassed to say it, but I started crying. I guess I was scared that he was trying to burn the place down because the fire was huge. It wasn't hot, but man, it lit the place up. Mommy and Papa were cool about it, though, and tried to cheer me up. Anyway, it was a little scary, but I made it out alive.

No pictures to share, but I figured I'd pass along some pictures from this week when we picked out a pumpkin, went to eat at the Ale House and a final picture of my teeth.

Tennessee never looked so fine

Most of you know by now that I spent last week in Tennessee. Great time. Absolutely fantastic. Words wouldn't do it justice, so despite my knack for a keen vocabulary for just a 10-month old (my birthday was Monday!), I figured I would just let the photos do most of the talking ... with a little commentary on the side. Enjoy ...

An early-morning walk with Grammy. Didn't much care for the toboggan. Later in the day we paid a visit to Grammy's work, where I invited myself to lunch.

------------------------------------
I went to check out the cows at Memaw and Paw's house. Even got to watch them eat! And I got to sit on the tractor. Farming may not be a bad career.

------------------------------------
I sat on the porch with Grammy for a while, and later went to visit with my friend Julian. His parents, Wes and Nikki were there, too. Julian was cool about letting me chew on his toys.

------------------------------------
Next we went to Memaw Pate's house, where I got to hang out with her, Aunt Sue, JoAnn, Amy and Susan, as well as Hunter. Good catching up with everyone.

------------------------------------
Mommy and Papa and I went to the lake with Memaw and Paw. Mace Dogg went with us, too! Beautiful scene. I really enjoyed being there -- perfect weather. And pefect for a nap afterward with Memaw Arnold and Macy.

------------------------------------
It was sad to leave Elizabethton, even sad to say goodbye to the kitties. But off we went to Knoxville ...

------------------------------------
In Knoxville, we went directly to the park, where we celebrated Irene and Walt's birthdays. In the meantime, I got to swing with Mommy and Uncle Matt, and even by myself.

------------------------------------
We sang Happy Birthday to Irene and Walt and had a great picnic at the park. Everyone else had chicken from KFC. Me? I had the usual food from a jar. Ho-hum. I did try some cake, and it was OK.

------------------------------------
After we ate, we headed back to the swings. They were just too much fun. So Nana hung out with me and pushed me a while on the swing. Great time.

------------------------------------
After that, I was exhausted and fell asleep as Uncle Matt and Mommy stopped by the hospital to see Aunt Jane and Papaw. We spent the night at Nana's house and then I hung out with Uncle Matt and Papa as Mommy and Nana went back for a visit to the hospital. After that, it was back home to Atlanta. I hated to leave, especially on such a beautiful day when I could have easily just lounged around at Nana's house. But I'll be back. Fear not.

Rocky Top, you'll always be ...

What's the best way to remove the sour taste of a Tennessee football season gone bad? Head to Knoxville for a weekend.

I didn't go to a game -- the Vols played (and lost) at Auburn on Saturday -- but I did ride up with mommy to spend the day in Knoxville. We went to see Aunt Jane, who had to go to the hospital for a few days. She's doing better now ... thanks to my visit? Probably.

During my time there I did get to go eat with Nana and Uncle Matt and Papaw. We went to Austin's, and I'm not big on buffets (see one of my earlier blog posts), but this time it was pretty good. Of course, I'm only going by what mommy says, and she's a fan of smorgasbords. Meanwhile, I had my typical jar food and a few bites of the real stuff.

It was a really good weekend, and really great to see everyone. We came back to Atlanta Sunday morning and just hung out the rest of the day.

This week has been pretty typical so far, although I did go to church on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday night I got to hang out with mommy and Kati as they worked on AWANA stuff. Then I busted up papa's meeting. I was feeling a little confined and wanted to crawl around. I saw papa through the door, Kati gave me to Amy, and Amy put me on the floor -- and then I was gone. I headed over to papa and just hung out while he tried to finish the meeting. But by the sounds of it, they were already finished. If not, too bad.

Wednesday I went back to church and ate some pizza, then had my jar food. And (don't tell anybody) convinced papa to slip me a bite of cake. Just a bite. It was cool to hang out during AWANA and go around to a few classrooms and see everybody. I'm looking forward to when I can go to AWANA, although it may be a while.

This weekend is a big one at church, and then we're headed back to Tennessee for a whole week. So it may be a while before I write again. What can I say? I'm a travelin' man.
